FamilySearch This site is from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. There are some "bugs" on this site, but overall it is very useful.
GenForum An excellent resource for posting queries on surnames, States, Countries and more.
Rootsweb Another valuable resource for searching ancestors.

 


UK Resources

GENUKI The UK & Ireland Genealogical Information Service. A must for those researching British ancestors.
Gareth's Help Page Another must-see if you're researching family in Wales.
Old-Maps A great source providing free access to first edition historical maps of Great Britain dated between 1846 and 1899.

 


US Specific Links

Social Security Calculator Enter the first three digits of a SS# and find out where the person lived when he applied for his SS#.
Social Security Death Index From Rootsweb.
Geographic Place Finder Not sure where a particular town is located. Just enter the town name and voila, this USGS program locates each town with that particular name.

Carbon County PA For those who have ancestors from Carbon Co., PA, this is an extensive site.
Northumberland County PA For those who have ancestors from Northumberland Co., PA, USA, check this out.
Schuylkill County PA For those who have ancestors from Schuylkill Co., PA, this is an extensive site.
Tim's Tips on PA German Research A lot of good information if you're researching German-American ancestors, especially if they lived in Pennsylvania...information on German names, spelling/pronunciation, church records, etc.
