Update 31 Jan 2002....Mystery Solved!

While looking through the 1860 Census (Coal Twp., Shamokin P.O., Northumberland Co., PA) for another family, I came across an entry for an Elizabeth Furman (age 15)  living with Alvin Alexander (age 32) & his wife, Rebecca (age 26). It turns out that "pop's uncle Alvin Alexander" was married to Rebecca Furman, daughter of John Furman & Ann Ritchie.  John and Ann Furman had both died in 1859, and young Elizabeth must have gone  to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Alvin Alexander.

Alexander was his surname, not a middle name, which was partially responsible for my confusion.
